Palestine on Brink As Hamas Takes Over

March 14th, 2010

A new Palestinian parliament, dominated by the militant group Hamas, was sworn in yesterday amid threats of an international boycott and domestic paralysis that could lead to the collapse of the Palestinian Authority.

Israel has promised to enforce an economic blockade of Palestinian areas, while the European Union and America say they will withhold aid unless Hamas renounces violence and recognizes Israel. Hamas also faces strong internal opposition, with some members of the Fatah party, which until the elections dominated Palestinian life, determined to obstruct the new government in every way they could.

At the meeting of the Palestinian Legislative Council in the government compound in Ramallah, Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, told Hamas it must form a government as quickly as possible, but laid down stringent conditions that contradict its declared aims. He said Hamas must respect all agreements made with Israel, which means the group must recognize Israel. Hamas calls for the destruction of the state of Israel in its charter and has rejected all previous Israeli-Palestinian agreements.

On a practical level, Hamas has accepted many of the President’s principles. Apart from a few isolated incidents, it suspended military activities more than a year ago and its participation in government and elections implies recognition of the agreements – and the existence of Israel. However, it is reluctant to abandon its aggressive rhetoric or recognize Israel until the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza.

Within an hour of the inauguration of the new parliament, the first divisions emerged. Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza City, said it rejects negotiation while Palestinian territory is occupied. Hamas will propose Ismail Haniyeh, one of the Hamas leaders in Gaza, as Prime Minister. He said he hoped a compromise could be reached, despite conflicting views.

‘We will deal with this difference in the political position… through dialogue and understanding, to preserve the national unity of the Palestinian people and promote the higher interests of our people,’ he said.

In spite of the conciliatory rhetoric of Abbas and Haniyeh, the Palestinians face an extremely difficult task in bridging the positions of Hamas and Fatah. Although Hamas control 56 per cent of the seats, it won only 44 per cent of the vote, with Fatah receiving 42 per cent. According to Khalil Shiqaqi, a Ramallah-based election analyst, if Fatah had organized its candidates better it would have won a further 16 seats and the election.

Consequently, many Fatah members see the result as an aberration thrown up by the voting system rather than the will of the people. ‘Some Fatah people are already talking about fresh elections tomorrow,’ he added.

Last week the New York Times reported that Israel and the US had decided to isolate the new Hamas government and lay the ground for a political crisis which would lead to fresh elections.

In addition to the international opposition, there are a raft of measures available to Fatah to hold Hamas back. The President has an effective veto on any legislation and Fatah dominates the ministries of government and security agencies. Hamas is further constrained by Israel’s control of the Palestinian territories and the importance of international donations to prop up an economy severely damaged by the effects of more than 20 years of conflict with Israel.

Nashat Aqtash, Hamas’s media adviser during the elections, said he believed Hamas would be able to weather the initial storm and force Fatah to deal with its government constructively.

‘Hamas had all its leaders deported by Israel in 1992 and imprisoned by the PA in 1996. Many of the leaders were assassinated by Israel. Despite this, it has continued to grow in popularity and strength. Either Fatah will get on the Hamas train or will disappear as a political force. The good people in Fatah have already been making contact to explore how everyone can work together,’ he added.

Traits Of A Poor Custom Essay Service

March 14th, 2010

It’s a miserable instant when a client realizes that he has been duped by a substandard custom essay service, and then followed by long bouts of almost-physical pain when said client attempts to salvage what can be salvaged. In worst-case scenarios, the damage is too far gone that unfortunate clients helplessly receive the full brunt of academic backslash.

Do not be tricked by this ever growing threat of service cheats. Here are six glaring traits of poor online sites to look out for and veer away from:

Recycled Papers
This is one of rare instances where the word recycle leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Clearly, nobody wants to purchase a custom essay previously used by another. Each customized article, having been paid for accordingly, should then be exclusively written for one client, as well as exclusively bound to that same client.

But as it turns out, there are essay sites that compile all its finished materials into a database, after which it enforces this sleazy practice of recycling any old custom essay that fits a new order’s requirements. It sounds too unprofessional, but there really are companies operating in such a manner.

Student or Unqualified Writers
Having students for writers is another cheating tactic of certain custom essay sites. The company website boasts of specialists and PhD professionals, but the writers are really college students, or worse, unqualified writers based abroad. This is not to undermine the capacity of students and other nationalities, but to emphasize on the thwarted implementation of the agreement. The trusting client is paying for the services of an expert, but what he gets may just be the bumbling attempt of some so-called writer at essay composition.

Plagiarized Content
This is one of the most-feared outcome from lousy custom essay sites. Relative to the previous trait of hiring amateurs for a professional job, the snowball effect stresses on how these underqualified writers may just not be ethical or knowledgeable enough on the proper ways to cite sources. The result leads to flagrant copy-pasting approach of seemingly good content from other people’s works, and may ultimately end to severe punishment when caught.

It’s a good thing then that today’s technology already offers free anti-plagiarism sites. In this way, clients can check to see if the ordered essays contain any plagiarized content. Specifically, the two most popular sites now are www.copyscape.com and www.articlechecker.com.

Unknown or Untraceable Writer
Beware of ghost writers, literally ghostlike writers that clients do not get to talk to or get ahold of during the entire duration of the writing process. Quality custom essay services allow the open collaboration of clients and writers in coming up with first-rate essays and term papers. Substandard online sites do not.

No Money-back Guarantee
Professional custom essay services incorporate a money-back warranty as a means to showcase the quality of their work. There is that subtle hint then that said companies are confident enough of their services.

Not-so-professional sites, on the other hand, know exactly what they’re worth. Indeed, there is hesitancy to integrate the money-back guarantee. Disappointed clients may just get back at them through this feature, thus resulting to retracted profits.

Too Cheap Fees
Bargains are great finds, but not in the case of customized essay writing. Very cheap writing fees are normally the result of all these newly-discussed bad traits. No highly qualified researcher or writer will stoop so low as to accept a meager pay for all that hard work. So, better to shell out a reasonable amount of money for an essay, than to hunt for too-cheap alternatives that can only offer too-cheap results.

Final Warning
Without a doubt, these traits are the works of sleazy custom essay providers. It is then best to critically study the company profiles and reputations of these online services before settling down to one provider. One can never be too careful when the two things at stake are academic qualifications and personal reputation.

Ambit Energy – Deregulation Brings New Options To Illinois Consumers 2010

March 14th, 2010

Some Energy suppliers, like Ambit Energy, offer a combination of ways to keep more money in your wallet, including rate savings guarantees, discounts off your bill for referring new customers, and free travel awards.

Since 1935, gas and electric companies were prohibited from operating across state lines, which created local utility monopolies. If you lived in northern Illinois, for example, you had to buy your electricity from ComEd and your natural gas from Nicor, while southern Illinois residents had to use Ameren. But since energy deregulation went into effect in Illinois in March, 2008, both residential and small business customers now have a choice of companies, at least for part of their electricity and/or gas service. Service is now divided into two components: producer/suppliers versus delivery lines. While ComEd or Ameren power lines still deliver all of the electricity to homes and businesses, you can now choose an alternative supplier. Similarly, Nicor or Ameren gas lines still deliver all of the gas, but you can choose an alternative gas supplier. (This will sound familiar to those who remember when long-distance telephone service was deregulated in the 1980s: the local phone company still controlled the telephone line that connected your house to the system, but the new long-distance providers like Sprint and MCI were able to send their calls through those same lines.)

This change comes at a time when Americans are increasingly concerned about the rising worldwide demand for energy that is driving up gas and electric prices and also having a negative impact on the environment. Both consumers and businesses have responded positively to many energy conservation and “green” efforts, especially since many of these efforts result in substantial cost savings.

Many Consumers Still Haven’t Taken Advantage of Energy Deregulation Options. Given the concern about both environmental and financial impacts, you would think most consumers would have explored their energy alternatives by now, and many would have switched to a cheaper or “greener” provider. Yet many people still aren’t even aware that they have a choice! Of those who are aware that they have a choice, some may be concerned that there will be billing complications when they switch from having a single provider to using two separate providers (one for supply/production and one for delivery).

How Can I Benefit From Energy Deregulation? The first step is to learn about your options. Two state-funded organizations – the Illinois Commerce Commission and the Citizens Utility Board – have websites and printed materials that explain energy deregulation and list the approved suppliers in your zip code. Then, with your past utility bills in hand, you can get rate quotes from the new companies that are now competing with ComEd, Ameren, and Nicor for residential customers. Examples of the new electric suppliers include BlueStar and FirstEnergy: Examples of the new natural gas suppliers include Ambit Energy and Integrys.

Some companies offer both fixed rate and variable rate plans. In October 2009, for example, Integrys was offering natural gas to residential customers at a variable rate of 47 cents per Therm (which can go up or down every month based on the market price) or a one-year-fixed rate of 75 cents per Therm. If you lock in a historically low fixed rate, you are protected from future rate hikes for the next year. On the other hand, if the current market rate is high, and you think prices are likely to go down, you could elect the variable rate plan.

In addition to pricing, you will also want to consider the customer service record, business practices, and environmental ethics of each supplier. For example, some energy plants are fueled by landfill gas, while other suppliers offer wind-generated electricity. You can even choose a company that supports a charity that is close to your heart; Ambit, for example, supports breast cancer research.

Given that the average homeowner’s annual heating bill is $783 (natural gas) to $933, an hour spent researching your options and finding a 10% or more annual savings is a good investment!

Finding a Good Small Business VoIP Provider

March 14th, 2010

Good business sense tells you to make the most of every opportunity that comes along. Whether that’s an opportunity to expand your business on an international stage or to save money on something as fundamental as your monthly phone bill, every business opportunity has to be grabbed with both hands to make your company a success. So a system that can potentially do both for you is an opportunity not to be missed.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is just such an opportunity. For business users, the advent of this new technology opens up new possibilities and new ways to save a considerable amount of money at the same time. Unlike most new technology, VoIP doesn’t require any additional equipment to install. All you need is a PC and a broadband connection. Unlike traditional phone systems, VoIP uses the Internet to connect between PCs on the same system, allowing you to make and receive calls on your computer. If you use a VoIP provider, that range is expanded to allow you to make VoIP calls using a traditional hand-held phone, thus improving the quality of the calls. It also means that your recipient doesn’t have to have VoIP at their end, which is a step up from the early PC-to-PC only VoIP systems.

VoIP works in a unique way. It breaks down the voice into transmitted digital data packets and then sends it through your broadband connection in the same way as it sends all other data. The result? Cheap instant calls that save your business money. VoIP can be used in any size organisation, making it applicable for both small and medium business users. If you are looking to break into a foreign marketplace and this involves a high volume of calls with potential clients or suppliers, business VoIP may be the best way of maximising your international business contact potential without increasing your expenditure. Because VoIP uses the Internet to send calls, the location of your original call is irrelevant, as the proximity to the destination cannot be determined, thus avoiding the long distance charges that would normally be incurred on a traditional landline.

Business VoIP has one big advantage if your location is part of a network of outlets that are all part of the same company. By using business VoIP, you can call anyone within that network regardless of their location by simply dialling the appropriate extension number. Business VoIP also offers customers standard features such as voicemail, call forwarding and caller ID as well as additional features such as softphone support and outlook integration.

You do have to consider a few external factors before rushing to install VoIP as part of your business communications package, however. VoIP runs through your Internet broadband connection so you must ensure you have sufficient bandwidth, although VoIP providers do not require substantial amounts of bandwidth, some even allow you to dictate how much bandwidth you would like to dedicate to your VoIP calls. Power outages can also interfere with the operation of the system, so it may be worthwhile thinking about a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) system if one hasn’t already been installed.

VoIP is quickly establishing itself as a fast, efficient and cheap way of making phone calls. It makes sense that businesses, still struggling in the grips of a worldwide recession, should take every opportunity to make their business as efficient as possible. Talking to a VoIP provider and discussing your business needs is the first step in a small investment that could garner big savings as your business grows. It also means that you’ll be able to make international calls without worrying about the cost. And it could be that one international call that propels your company onto the global stage.

The History Of Halloween Music

March 14th, 2010

Some may debate whether Bobby Pickett’s “Monster Mash” or the beginning of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D minor” was the first music to unequivocally be associated with Halloween, while other’s may insist that nothing truly scary made an impact on the national consciousness until the Starland Vocal Band released “Afternoon Delight”.

No matter what you associate musically with Halloween, the songs and themes that seem to pop up year after year around October 31st have certainly made an impact. Unlike Christmas Music, which has a rich tradition (aside from the deplorable “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”), Halloween music is almost exclusively a product of the 20th century.

The number of purely musical releases are few and far between. Most recognizable Halloween themes were a byproduct from the film and television industry. Consider Ray Parker Jr’s “Ghostbusters”, which was originally titled “I Want a New Drug” and performed by Huey Lewis and the News. It not only rose to the top of the charts, but has also enjoyed many subsequent years of airplay because of the Halloween season, much to the chagrin of anyone who can’t appreciate the beauty of rhyming “dose” with “ghost”.

Even more popular are the sound bites from various horror franchises. Who can forget the busy yet astonishingly creepy theme to John Carpenter’s “Halloween” or the scary, slow building strings that John Williams wrote for Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws”? And dare we not include Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” from the movie Titanic. Talk about frightening!

Indeed, movie and TV themes such as “The Twilight Zone”, written and performed by Neil Norman & His Cosmic Orchestra, seem to resonate with more appeal than novelty songs written with monster mayhem in mind. Personally, I blame the song “The Blob” which was written and performed by the ingeniously named The Five Blobs for setting a terrible precedence. It’s not easy to adequately convey the urgent need to “be careful of the blob” with monotone vocals and music that sounds fresh from an Annette Funicello, Franky Avalon surf picture, but somehow all five blobs managed.

No matter what music puts you in the mood for frightening fun this Halloween season, it’s almost a given that you’ll hear it somewhere. Whether it comes from the television, the radio, or via the humming of that co-worker in the cubical next to your who you never were all that sure about, Halloween music is indeed here to stay.

Steel Art in Thailand – Miracle of the 21st Century

March 13th, 2010

Thailand is making a name in the international arena in making steel arts. Many Thai online sites showcase their craftsmanship in the form of Alien, Star Wars characters, Predator, and so on. These are made from scrap metal and are freestanding.

The development of the industry started about 15 years ago. Small and very basic models were being made by independent artists using wire, bolts and nuts. Stick figures, motorcycles and animal models were being made. This was but a hobby and there was no commercial intention behind the creation of these figures, they were just a way of spending time for 12 craftsmen.
After the appearance of the first Predator movie in 1987, this industry experienced its first growth. The artists were by this time adept at basic models and were seeking challenge. So they decided to work together to create a Predator statue, made from scrap metal.

The Thailand manufacturing industry for the creation of metal sculptures could only grow so fast because there was a lot of cheap scrap metal. These were sourced from Ford Thailand, scrap yards, boat manufacturers, military suppliers etc. 5 artists together mad the first Predator, which was 1.5 meters high and took four months. 20 workers also volunteered time to complete this statue. At that time no internet existed, and there were no computer designing, digital photography. The entire design was made from one photo and this was just a poster of the Predator which was imported from USA.

Artists had no design ideas, and no plans on how to start construction. The work was basically a social activity. A three dimensional frame was made from wires and artists searched through the masses of scrap metals and discussed which parts would look good on the statue. Drinking was as much a part of the event as was construction. The artist voted to complete the job if anyone thought there were improvements to be made.

The finished statue was not sold but passed between the people who made it. Finally it was donated to charity. But the legacy that was born never ceased to exist. Now it is a bit difficult to get the workers with skill and team spirit. But once such a group is assembled, they work with a great sense of family spirit. They share the glory of making a statue and are happy to assist each other.

Thailand has developed a great hand crafted steel works industry. There are many people involved in this business and they are getting great offers as well. For example, the Art From Steel, Thailand’s largest manufacturer of steel art, gets regular offers to make factories replica, Alien V’s Predator bar furniture, symbols and gift items. Science fiction seems to be the most attractive of the works. Along with the Aliens, Star Wars and Predators, they are also producing Terminator, Gremlin etc designs as well. So it is becoming a good source of revenue for the Thailand people as well. There are scopes for major developments in this sector.
